Charlestown has a beautiful and historic harbour which is still used today by local fisherman who supply the local restaurants with their catches.
It was named after
Charles Rashleigh
who had the
harbour built in the
1800’s so that china
clay, copper and
stone could be
exported around the
world. It is home
to Tall Ships that
are moored in the
harbour and are of great interest to numerous visitors each year, especially when the Regatta is held during August, a celebration of all things nautical.
The Tall Ships have been used as a backdrop for a variety of drama and film productions using many of the locals as extras and include; Alice in Wonderland, Poldark, Rebecca, Frenchman's Creek, The Onedin Line, Mansfield Park, The Three Musketeers, The Eagle Has Landed and many more.
